If you're evaluating project management tools for your development team, chances are Redmine and Jira are both on your shortlist. They're both powerful, widely used, and capable of handling complex workflows — but they're built for very different kinds of teams.

What is Redmine?
Redmine is a free, open-source project management tool built on Ruby on Rails. It's been around since 2006 and has a large, active community. You host it yourself — on your own server — which means full control over your data, no subscription fees, and the ability to customise everything.
It's particularly popular with technical teams that want flexibility without paying per seat.
What is Jira?
Jira is a commercial product from Atlassian. It's the dominant tool in larger enterprises and companies already using the Atlassian ecosystem (Confluence, Bitbucket). It offers a polished UI, powerful reporting, and deep integrations out of the box — at a cost.
Cost
Redmine is free. You pay only for hosting (which can be as low as $5–10/month on a VPS) and optionally for commercial plugins. For a team of 20, total cost might be $100–200/year.
Jira charges per user. At $8–15 per user per month, a team of 20 costs $1,920–3,600/year — and that's before add-ons.
Winner for cost: Redmine, by a wide margin.
Ease of use
Jira has invested heavily in UX over the years. Onboarding a non-technical stakeholder is straightforward, and the interface is intuitive for most users.
Redmine's interface is functional but dated. New team members often need a short orientation. That said, power users tend to appreciate its directness once they're comfortable.

Customisation and control
This is where Redmine shines. Because you host it yourself and have access to the source code, you can customise workflows, fields, permissions, and appearance to exactly match how your team works. There's also a rich plugin ecosystem.
Jira offers configuration, but within Atlassian's boundaries. You're also dependent on their infrastructure, their uptime, and their pricing decisions.

Integrations
Jira integrates with virtually everything — GitHub, Slack, Figma, CI/CD pipelines, and hundreds of third-party tools via the Atlassian Marketplace.
Redmine has integrations too, but they require more setup. Git integration works well; for everything else, you may need to configure webhooks or use community plugins.

Which should you choose?
Choose Redmine if:

- You want full control over your data
- Your team is technical and comfortable with self-hosted tools
- You need deep customisation of workflows
Choose Jira if:
- You're already in the Atlassian ecosystem
